Autumn Lantern Parade is one of the traditional folk customs in Foshan City, Guangdong Province. It refers to the harvest parade held by local people to celebrate the harvest in autumn.
If you don’t come to Foshan, you won’t know the “Autumn Scenery”. When you are in Foshan, the “Autumn Scenery” will attract your mind. The streets and shops have various autumn lanterns, and the large-scale lanterns with exquisite craftsmanship in the folk art club are all beautiful and dazzling, making people fascinated and nostalgic.
Autumn Lantern Parade is an event in Foshan to show crafted lanterns around the Mid Autumn Festival to express the joy of harvest, commonly known as “Autumn colors” – the scenery of harvest.
The handicrafts such as lanterns made for the Autumn Lantern Parade are called “autumn art”. It’s said that there were a group of kids in the old days who bundled up straws after harvesting to form small dragons, and put incense on the dragons to dance in the streets, which attracted men and women, the old and the young to watch. After that, around the Mid Autumn Festival, Foshan people presented Autumn Lantern Parade to worship the gods, pray for good weather and good harvest. According to records, Autumn Lantern Parade originated from the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty, with a history of nearly 600 years. This was appreciated by people, so it has developed into a recreational event, and the content is becoming richer and richer with local characteristics.
Foshan’s Autumn Lantern Parade is large in scale and rich in forms. Therefore, Foshan is called the hometown of the art of Autumn Lantern Parade.
Autumn Lantern Parade carries the folk wisdom of Foshan. In the past, it was mostly held in the evening of the harvest season. Autumn Lantern Parade has strict forms and contents, including performance arts and handicraft arts. Various exquisite handicrafts are displayed in the form of parades, including colored lanterns, top floats, makeup modeling and various performing arts, folk music, and performances such as dragon dance, lion dance, Shifan, gongs and drums. Year after year, with more superb skills and larger scales, this has become a representative event of Lingnan culture. In the past years, Foshan’s Autumn Lantern Parade has become a folk carnival that people look forward to.
